Slug Card Options: How to Obtain and Protect Your Copy Card
Summary: Learn about the three different types of copy cards.
Slug Card Access allows anyone with a Slug Card to copy at our many copiers on campus that have a card terminal. The Copier Program offers three types of copy cards:
- Credit Slug Cards provide unlimited copying on Copier Program machines (that have a card terminal) at convenient locations all across campus. Departments receive a recharge report each month from the Copier Program for the actual number of copies made, recharged at the rate of $.06/copy.
- Credit-Limit Slug Cards allow copying up to a predetermined copy limit. This card works great for accounts with limited/designated funds (e.g. grants). Credit-Limit Slug Cards are billed the same way as regular credit slug cards and Copier Program Staff can renew the limit ($20 minimum to $300.00 maximum) when necessary.
- Debit Slug Cards are purchased and have value associated with the cards themselves. They are primarily for students and personal copying, and can be used in any Copier Program copier that has a card terminal. Making copies with this type of card reduces the value on the card at the rate of $.08/copy. Original purchase of card is $1.00 that includes $.25 value. Add value to debit slug cards at Card Service Centers or at any copier that accepts both cash and cards. See: Locations Where You Can Use Your Slug Card.
When you take your Slug Card with you when you have business across campus, you can use it on any copier with a card terminal, with no extra costs or accounting hassles!

Obtaining Credit Slug Cards & Credit-Limit Slug Cards
Credit Slug Cards and Credit-Limit Slug Cards can be obtained by contacting the Copier Program via email: ps_copiers @ucsc.edu. For each card, you will need to provide the following information:
- FOAPAL to be Recharged
- User Name
- Account Name
- Business Office or Budget Manager (where monthly reports are to be sent)
Card numbers are assigned by Copier Program Staff.
Cards can be re-assigned to another user, the FOAPAL can be changed, etc. Simply contact us when information needs to be updated.
Protecting Credit Slug Cards
If you lose a Slug Credit Card, report it immediately. Copier Program Staff must lock out any lost credit slug card to prevent unauthorized use of the card. There is a LOCKOUT FEE of $25.00 for this required service that entails reprogramming every card terminal on campus. It is important that all lost cards are reported immediately and locked out to assure maximum copier account control! There is no charge for issuing new, additional, or replacement cards.
Obtaining Debit Slug Cards
Debit Slug Cards can be purchased at the following Card Service Center locations:
- McHenry Library copy room
- Science Library copy room
- XpressIt! Digital Copy Center - Quarry Plaza/Bookstore Commons
Bulk orders for Debit Slug Cards can be placed with the Copier Program by completing and submitting a UCSC Recharge Form.
Protecting Debit Slug Cards
Take care of your copy card as you would care for your credit card. Keep it away from magnetic fields because it can be erased. Do not send it through the washer and dryer in your pocket, because it can melt. Do not leave it lying around, because it might get misplaced or stolen. Simple care and common sense will ensure easy and convenient copying.
WARNING: IF YOU LOSE or erase data from a Slug Debit Card you have lost cash money, and we will not be able to reimburse the value of your card.
Please contact the Copier Program at 459-5799 if you have a problem with your Slug Card working properly. If it is still readable in our encoder, we will replace the card with its current value.
